Botulinum Toxin A is a chemical which can inactivate muscles for 3-6 months. It has been used for many years now in cosmetic practices to eliminate dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles produced by contraction of muscles) from the face. This product is primarily used for wrinkles occurring on the forehead, glabella (area between the eyes), and the crow's feet area (just outside of the eyes). It is also used to treat lines around the mouth and to decrease the vertical bands that can form in the neck. For continued effect, Botox needs to be reinjected every 3-6 months. Botox can not be used for wrinkles at the jowls and nasaolabial fold, as the muscles in these areas are used every day to convey emotions and expressions.
The main risk associated with botox injections is temporary drooping of the upper eyelid. This complication is rarely seen, and it can be treated should it occur.
Botox is a tremendously appealing option for patients because there is usually no downtime associated with this procedure. Patients get a dramatic result without having to take time out of there busy lives. Occasionally, patients will get a very small bruise at the injection site. If this occurs, it usually disappears within 2-3 days.
