Pre-Operative Instructions
Preparing for Successful Surgery
Anesthesia for Surgery
Nasal Septum Repair
1. You will be called 24 hours prior to your surgery date and instructed where and when to arrive.
2. You should have nothing to eat or drink for 8 hours prior to surgery. Generally, this means having no food or water after midnight before surgery. For surgeries at Children’s Hospital, your child can have clear liquids up to 4 hours prior to the start time.
3. Medications containing aspirin (Excedrin), ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naprosyn (Aleve) should be discontinued for 2 weeks prior to surgery to minimize bleeding complications. Some medications, such as Coumadin or Plavix, may also increase the risk of bleeding. Your doctor will review your current medication profile and advise you of any other drugs to discontinue.
4. Patients should arrange for a responsible adult (18 years of age or older) to drive them home from the hospital.
5. Bring your Kaiser Card and a Photo ID card with you the day of surgery.
6. Bring your co-payment if you have one.
7. Leave jewelry, watches, wallets, credit cards, and purses at home.
8. You may take medications for asthma, seizures, cardiac conditions or hypertension (except for digoxin and diuretics), and Parkinson’s Disease the morning of surgery with a small sip of water.
9. If you have diabetes, you should withhold your usual dose of oral medication and insulin on the morning of your surgery.
10. In addition to your Pre-Operative visit with your Surgeon ( 2nd floor, Oak) you are also required to report to the Admitting Department (1st floor, Sequoia).
11. Remember to have any labs, EKG, X-ray (if ordered by your Surgeon) completed no later than 3 days prior to your pre-op appointment. Please go directly to Lab, Radiology, and Cardiology (1st floor, Palm). You do not need lab slips or fast for lab work.
