My Biography

During medical school, pediatricians were my favorites among all the doctors. I also decided to become a pediatrician because this work involves families, not only individuals.

I was born at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland. I love working for Permanente Medical Group with Kaiser Permanente. My patients are wonderful and caring, and my colleagues are excellent. I feel that I can help my patients get the best possible care, and that my patients and I can also call on specialists when necessary. Kaiser is not perfect - it’s just that it’s easily the best medical organization in the United States!

I feel strongly that each child deserves to be treated with respect and dignity and that my first duty is to the patient, even before the parent. I try to remind each parent what a good job he or she is doing with such an important, challenging job. Most parents care more about their children more than anything else in life. I try to encourage parents to combine limit setting with tender, loving care.

Most decisions we make as parents can be intuitive, and I try to reassure folks to trust their own judgment, but when I feel one particular approach is the best I definitely want parents to know my opinion. I trust my colleagues and don’t mind if parents ask others for opinions. And, by the way, I completely agree with our current vaccine recommendations!!

I chair the local Kaiser Bioethics Committee and help edit regional publications sent to Kaiser Permanente Bioethics Committee members throughout Northern California. I also have studied clinician-patient communication and help teach communication skills to clinicians.

My wife Debby and I married in 1977, and we have three children. Mara was born in 1981, Renee in 1984, and Devin in 1989. I love running, biking, swimming, reading (fiction, non-fiction, and politics), writing, playing and listening to music, and traveling.

To help your child have the best possible visit, please come on time, bring vaccine records, turn off cell phones, and save food and drinks to enjoy later outside of the exam room. Thanks!

Please call to make an appointment prior to arriving in the clinic, as we do not have appointments available for walk-in patients.

Our goal at Kaiser Permanente is to be your health plan of choice and deliver the quality medical care our members deserve. Thank you again for choosing Kaiser Permanente.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
