My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am an emergency physician who began his career in family practice. During my career in the military, I was fortunate to have the opportunity for additional training in emergency medicine and now practice exclusively in this area. I was attracted to the specialty of emergency for the challenge of taking care of a broad variety of different types of patients and because the practice of emergency medicine allows me to make a difference in patients’ lives every day.

My Practice Philosophy

Increasingly, medicine is a “team sport”. As an emergency physician with Kaiser Permanente, I have unrestricted access to immediate consultation with any specialist needed to provide the best care for my patients. Moreover, as part of Kaiser Permanente I can access patients’ medical records in order to order the right tests and treatments. Finally, as an emergency physician (and former primary care physician) I am convinced that patients get their best care from a clinician who they know, and who knows them. I take great comfort in the knowledge that the Kaiser Permanente patients I see in the emergency department can always have follow-up with their regular clinician on a timely basis.

The emergency department can be a frightening and sometimes frustrating place to be a patient. It is frequently very busy, noisy and the vast majority of emergency patients will never before have seen the doctors and nurses caring for them. Delays and interruptions are common, as more seriously ill and injured patients are seen. Please be reassured that despite what may at times seem a chaotic environment, the physicians, nurses and other emergency department staff are dedicated to providing you and your family members with the highest quality of care and service.

My Tenure With Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in July 2006 after retiring from a career in the United States Army. I currently see patients in the emergency departments and medical treatment units in Sacramento and Roseville and also work with the advice nurses at the advice and appointment center.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

During my transition from a career in the military, I examined a variety of opportunities across the country, and even did some “moonlighting” at locations with positions that interested me most. This experience clearly revealed Kaiser Permanente’s system of integrated care as providing the best care possible. At Kaiser Permanente I am free to obtain any test, treatment or consultation needed to take care of my patients. My colleagues in the emergency department and throughout The Permanente Medical Group are dedicated first to taking care of patients, and I believe that it is this organizational ethic that has resulted in Kaiser Permanente’s success.

On a Personal Note

My service in the military included overseas assignments in Europe and the mid-east as well as ten years as faculty for military residency training programs in family practice and emergency medicine. In my free time I enjoy running, photography, working around the house and the challenges of debating national and world affairs with my wife and two sons, ages 13 and 15.
