About Me

I am a gastroenterologist. This means I look after problems of the GI tract including the esophagus, stomach, liver and intestines. I decided to do this because my personality is suited to quick answers, which can be readily achieved with the innovative endoscopic technology now available. The specialty is very hands-on and tests an individual's hand/eye coordination and timing. Having trained in martial arts for 30 years I enjoy making my body respond to mental commands and training my reflex behavior.

I have learned much about human nature from the many years of practicing in different countries and through the various jobs I had as a medical student including taxi driving, waitering, and laying down bitumen in school grounds. I have discovered that people fear most what they don't understand, so I make every effort to carefully explain the problem at hand and what the options are to deal with it. Studies now show us that explanation leads to better outcomes in conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome. For this reason 10 years ago I established the IBS class where we give detailed explanations to groups of patients who are often reassured by the number of other people who suffer from the condition. This class has allowed patients to readily access our expertise and is now being copied by several groups around the country.

My practice incorporates a strong research orientation to provide the best treatment and information for my patients. We have a strong affiliation with the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute. I am a co-principal investigator on two large trials of colon cancer screening and prevention.

Receiving Your Healthcare from Kaiser

The Kaiser system encompasses all aspects of care with a unified philosophy. After several years in academic medicine, including two and a half with UCD, I decided to join Kaiser Permanente 13 years ago. I was intrigued by the preventative philosophy and the support given to clinical research. I appreciate the encouragement we get to keep people well using evidence-based medicine. KP has allowed me to pursue my ambition to do top quality research. I now have an established program, which is closely integrated with some of the world's leading researchers from the Mayo Clinic, UC Irvine, Loma Linda, University of Arizona and University of Colorado. We have established funding from the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute and several biotech and pharmaceutical companies allowing us to bring innovative diagnostic and therapeutic options to patients. We incorporate residents into the program thus helping their careers in medical research.

My Credentials

Medical school University of New South Wales, Kensington, Australia
Internship St. George Hospital, Sydney, Nsw, Australia
Residency St. George Hospital, Sydney, Nsw, Australia
Fellowship University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, CO
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine
Board certification Gastroenterology, American Board of Internal Medicine

I was honored this year to be included as one of the top doctors in Sacramento as published in the Sacramento magazine. Also, UC Davis promoted me to full Clinical Professor of Medicine. I was recipient of a Fulbright scholarship and I was successful in obtaining a PhD from the University of Adelaide in Australia. I now belong to the American Association for Cancer Research, the American Gastroenterological Association and I am a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. My interests include colon cancer detection and prevention plus the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. I have produced several peer-reviewed publications in these areas. In addition to English, I also speak Australian. I am also fortunate to have flexibility in my schedule to pursue other activities.

Outside Interests

I have traveled extensively and decided to settle in Sacramento for several reasons, in particular the location with proximity to the mountains and waterways. I grew up near the beautiful beaches of Sydney and surfed year round. I became interested in windsurfing 30 years ago and now enjoy frequent summer visits to Rio Vista, a top windsurfing location which commonly serves up winds in excess of 30 miles per hour. I became interested in snow skiing while living in Colorado. After a while, I got up the courage to heli ski in Canada. I now volunteer with the National Ski Patrol as a physician. I have also grown to enjoy good powder days on my snowboard. To stay in shape for these activities I bike every day to work, practice martial arts six hours a week and use the beautiful American River bike trail as often as possible. I have a wonderful family with an active and adorable wife, a successful son in the Hollywood movie industry and a daughter who is a manger in a business consultant firm.
