My Qualifications

I was born in Oklahoma and raised in New York, Puerto Rico, Oklahoma, and Texas. I attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas as an undergraduate. This was followed by a year of research in the cardiology lab, medical school, and an ophthalmology residency at Southwestern Medical School. After finishing a one-year fellowship in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at the LSU Eye Center in New Orleans, I accepted a full-time position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at Southwestern Medical School. There, I taught residents, conducted research and presented papers at national meetings on Acanthamoeba keratitis. I co-authored 27 journal articles and one book chapter.

I am board certified in Ophthalmology by the American Board of Ophthalmology. I joined the Permanente Medical Group in 1990 and established the Cornea Transplant Service.

My Healthcare Practice

I perform 50-70 transplant surgeries each year and work closely with the DCI Eye Bank here in Sacramento. My patients come from all over the northern California area. I do surgery on babies and octogenarians.

My Outside Interests

I enjoy spending time with my family, painting, jogging, swimming, biking, and traveling.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
