Neonatology - Medical Care of Newborns
During my medical training I was searching for a field of practice that transferred the science of human physiology I was learning into fulfilling the need to care for a special group of patients I could make a difference for. Thus, the discovery of neonatal medicine, an emerging science at the time.
Thoughts about how I practice Neonatology
Daily, I remain grateful to be a physician. It's at two oclock in the morning when I sometimes find myself thinking about my infant patients, their problems and their families. That's how I know I am a neonatologist. I rededicate myself at those moments to advocating for the benefit of the newborns I have been entrusted to care for. It is at those moments that I face the task of translating their needs into collaborative efforts that their family and the rest of the world can join on to. Neonatology continues to be a rewarding challenge; my patients are with me always.
The Permanente Medical Group, Kaiser Permanente and Me.
I joined the medical group here in Sacramento in 1991. The relationship has been mutually beneficial. I have learned a great deal about the practice of medicine, about health care in the State of California, USA, the world, and about business practice. TPMG and KP have learned a great deal about newborn medicine from Mark Ziegler. I think it has been a great experience for us both and I know we will both continue to work hard for the continued success of each other.
What's so unique about a medical practice at Kaiser Permanente?
Plenty. Kaiser Permanente is the perfect continuance to medical school and post graduate training. KP allows the much needed integration of the complexities of modern medical practice into the life of a very human doctor. I have the support of the greatest health care resource, Kaiser Permanente, in the world to help me take care of newborns. The collaboration between TPMG and KP gives me access to essentially all information and therapies in existence for newborn care, resource that I bring to making the best and most appropriate medical decisions for the babies I care for.
Professional associations
I am a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Mark Ziegler, M.D; a (hu)man, a husband and father, a physician
Remember the big freeze of 1990/91? My wife and I loaded our three small kids into the back of our car and left our midwest home, trekking all the way out west to California, slip sliding all the way across the frozen desert. Yes there was plenty of snow in the central valley the day we arrived in "sunny" California for the first time. Fortunately, we have never looked back. My family and I work, live and play in Sacramento and we do plenty of all three. KP keeps me busy in the hospital and nursery and also around the region administratively as I double as neonatologist and Director of Newborn Medicine for KP in the Valley. These are exciting times for many people including myself in this community that has exploded with growth and presented many challenges to keep up the infrastructure to support the population. One can really use their talents in many unexpected ways! I live in a great community and have made many new friends. If I am suffering from free time you will find me with a book in a coffee shop or else out swimming, biking or running. As my kids say to their midwest acquaintences, "Sacramento is heck-a-fun" and I have to agree. "Living" in Sacramento is putting it mildly. My roots grow deeper daily.
