Welcome to my Web Page!
I was born at Kaiser San Francisco and grew up in the Bay Area. I completed my undergraduate degree at UC Berkeley and my master’s degree at M.I.T. After completing my medical school training at UCLA and residency in Urology at UC San Francisco, I joined Kaiser Oakland in 1993. I am still a happy Kaiser Permanente Health Plan member myself.
Along with my clinical duties, I am Chief for Oakland Urology. I am very proud of my department, which offers excellence and expertise in almost all areas of medical and surgical Urology. Oakland Urologists are often recommended by our Urology colleagues at Stanford and UC San Francisco. The Bay Area “Consumer’s Checkbook” found that Bay Area physicians recommended more members of our Urology Department as “Top Doctors” than any Urology practice in the Bay Area. In fact, all of our physicians deserve recognition as “Top Bay Area Doctors”.
We have THE best staff. Kris, our Charge Nurse, and Stephanie, our Chief Advice Nurse are jewels! Both have more than 15 years of Oakland Urology experience. So they really know Urology. They provide expert and truly personalized Urology care and advice. Our patients and the Oakland Urologists love and trust them. Their motto is Rosie the Riveter’s “we can do it” – and they do! Tess and Marcie, our Physician Assistants, work very closely with the Urologists for office visits, surgery and hospital care. Our nursing staff, including Cleofe, Lois, Tracy, Angela, Michelle and Charles provide experienced, professional urology care that sets them apart. The face of Urology, Donna and voice of Urology, Katherine will help you with any scheduling concern you have. Oakland Urology doctors and nurses enjoy working as a team. Our common goal is to provide the best Urology service in the Bay Area. Every member of our physician and nursing team takes pride in the work we do every day.
Our major failing is that we often run late. Although we try to stay on schedule, our patients' problems may not follow our plan for the day. Some patient’s serious or emergency conditions may require our immediate attention. Other patient problems just take more time than our appointment times allow. We apologize for the inconvenience we cause our patients with our delays. Most of our regular patients are very understanding. They learn to bring a book or a magazine. Our regulars find that when they need us for important discussions about cancer or surgery, we will spend the time they need.
Personally, I enjoy a very busy family life. I try to balance work and family. I spend way too much of my free time watching sports – especially the Giants and Warriors. I am fortunate that my whole family has a common interest in sports. I believe that exercise is very important and I will encourage you to walk, run, swim, bike or join a Gym. This is one area that I practice what I preach!
I have been a jazz fan almost all my life, thanks to my brother who is a jazz guitarist. I really enjoy having patients who have similar interests in sports and Jazz. Many friendships result from these simple connections. So, if you knew Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Joe Henderson, Thelonious Monk, Dexter Gordon or the like, please tell me!
If you don’t like Jazz or follow baseball, that’s OK. Interesting people are always welcome!

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
