To My Patients:
Welcome to my Internet Home Page. This site is designed to provide you with the information you need to understand your visual health and learn more about some common eye disorders. There are a number of links to clinical information, as well as a link to the web sites of other members of our department. There is also useful information about cataract surgery and a section in Spanish. You can even use this site to refill prescriptions, or request an appointment with your personal physician.
About Me
I grew up in Cleveland, Ohio where I was one of four children. Having survived more cold winters than I like to remember, I moved to Southern California to complete high school. While I was there I attended UCLA as an undergraduate, majoring in Biology and Chemistry, which have always particularly interested me. During this time I was extremely active in sports, competing in track, ice hockey, wrestling and tennis and rowing "eights" on the UCLA Crew Team. After college I pursued an interest in law and followed it through UCLA School of Law where I received my degree in 1989, after which I practiced environmental law for several years. While this provided me with some exposure to the sciences, I found that I missed being a part of the wave of scientific discovery. It was then that I decided to follow my love of the unknown and attend medical school to unlock the wonders concerning the physiology of the human body. I received my medical training at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA, one of the oldest medical schools in the country, and stayed in the area for my medical internship, as well as my Ophthalmology training. Although the East Coast has a lot to offer, I missed my friends and all of the activities I grew to love in California, not to mention the wonderful weather. It was important to me to find an area where I could be part of a community and practice quality medicine in an environment where I was allowed the time to form relationships with my patients and not feel I was practicing assembly line medicine. I found that perfect mix at Kaiser Permanente and have relocated to the Sacramento area.
Philosophy of Care
Like many people who are drawn to medicine as a calling, I am dedicated to treating my patients. Whether that treatment involves surgery, medications or emotional support and understanding, I, along with the entire Ophthalmology Department, am committed to providing you the best care available anywhere. I view our interactions together as a relationship where we have a common goal; your health. We will each have responsibilities in the relationship and at times we may engage in negotiation and compromise, always with your best interests in mind. Although the clinic can be busy at times, there is always the possibility that you could be seen a bit later than your scheduled appointment. I want you to understand that you are important to me and that there is nearly always a patient care related reason for the delay. I look forward to getting to know you at your next visit.
Our entire Ophthalmology Department and I want to be certain that all of your concerns are addressed. If you need to schedule a follow-up appointment in the Department of Ophthalmology or forget to ask a question during your office visit, please call (916) 817-5100. Thank you.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
