My Profession and Why I Chose It

I am a gastroenterologist. This means that I specialize in diagnosing and treating diseases of the digestive system and liver.

The wide range of diagnostic and treatment options in our specialty made it an attractive field of practice for me. Overall, I hope that the care that I provide will have a positive effect on the lives of my patients.

My Credentials

Medical school New York University School of Medicine, New York, NY
Residency Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Long Beach, CA
Fellowship UC Irvine School of Medicine, Irvine, CA
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine
Board certification Gastroenterology, American Board of Internal Medicine

My Practice Philosophy

I treat my patients with respect and courtesy, the way that I would expect to be treated myself. In general, I feel that I should act as an advocate for my patients while developing a treatment plan with my patients’ full participation and understanding of the choices that are available to them.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I have been with Kaiser Permanente as a staff gastroenterologist since 1988. I value the high quality of care that my colleagues and I are able to provide to our patients, which is in large part due to the collaborative spirit that exists in our medical centers. In spite of the large size of the organization, the medical decisions are still made directly between the physician and the patient. There is a large network of primary care physicians and sub-specialists who work together to provide our members with the most up-to-date health care.

My Professional Interests and Affiliations

I am a member of the Sierra-Sacramento Valley Medical Society and the California Medical Association. I am also a member of the American Gastroenterological Association.

My Personal History

I was born in Cairo, Egypt, and my family moved to the U.S. when I was 15 years old.

I completed my undergraduate training at U.C. Irvine, where I received a BS in Biological Sciences. I attended medical school in New York and then returned to California to complete my internal medicine residency and my fellowship in gastroenterology. After completion of my medical training, I joined Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento in 1988, where I have worked as a gastroenterologist since. My wife and I have enjoyed living in the Sacramento area, where we are raising our three sons.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
