About Me

I love to solve puzzles, especially crosswords. I also love being a scientist. Pathology combines the best parts of both.

A pathologist is a consultant to other physicians. That makes me a doctor's doctor. I examine and diagnose specimens from any part of the body -- often in a matter of moments, while the patient is lying on an operating table. As pathologists, we look through microscopes and relay to your doctor a diagnosis. Although we rarely see the actual patient, we can make diagnoses based on tissues as thin as a hair or as tiny as the head of a pin.

I received my Masters and PhD degrees in Chemistry. My research involved tissue culture, gas chromatography and computer analysis via pattern recognition. Recognizing patterns -- normal and abnormal -- is a big part of what I do. I have been known to hum that old song from Sesame Street -- "one of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn’t belong" -- while I'm looking through the microscope.

Going to medical school after graduate school helped me satisfy my scientific curiosity. My special interest is hematopathology, and I particularly enjoy examining bone marrow biopsies and correlating them with flow cytometry. My colleagues in the Department of Pathology here at Kaiser Oakland provide a congenial and academic atmosphere, and the camaraderie I have found at Kaiser makes this a special place to practice medicine.

My interests outside of the hospital include snowboarding in Tahoe, kiteboarding in the San Francisco Bay and road bicycling in the East Bay hills. I'm partial to dark chocolate, Tibetan terriers and straight-ahead jazz.
