My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a family medicine doctor and I chose this field because I enjoy getting to know my patients well. I do not wish to know only about their disease, but all other aspects of their lives. This knowledge gives you a better understanding of what contributes or leads to their disease. To achieve this, there should be a good patient-doctor relationship; trust is built towards one another. I think this is important for an effective delivery of health care.

My Practice Philosophy

“Doctor” in Latin means teacher. To me, family physicians are at the forefront in educating their patients. One of my goals is to educate my patients about the importance of preventive medicine. I also believe that effective medical care involves a partnership with patients, getting them involved in decision making that affects their health.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I’ve been with Kaiser Permanente since September 2008. I worked for Group Health in Washington State for 2 years before my wife and I moved here to Sacramento. I enjoyed working for Group Health so much that I told my wife “If we move to California, we should work for Kaiser Permanente.” Just like Group Health, Kaiser Permanente delivers evidence based, quality health care with attention to prevention of diseases. Kaiser Permanente also uses the same EMR (electronic medical record) as Group Health which meant an easier transition for me.

On a Personal Note. . .

I was born and raised in the Philippines. I am married to Dr. Sharon Tan, a family medicine doctor who is also practicing medicine here.

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
