Continuing Care

I graduated from the San Francisco State University School of Nursing in 1979 and obtained my MS in Nursing with certification as a gerontological nurse practitioner from UC San Francisco in 1996. Most of my nursing career has focused on the care of elders in the acute hospital or at home with visiting nurse or hospice care.

I particularly enjoy working with older persons, perhaps because I lacked extended family contact during my childhood. I value the wisdom and perspective that comes from long life experience.

I have been part of the Continuing Care Services Department in the East Bay since 1997 where I am part of a team of nurse practitioners and physicians who care for our elderly members in skilled nursing facilities in the Oakland and Richmond area. I chose to work for Kaiser because of its egalitarian nature, because I believe in its strong emphasis on preventive health care, and because I believe we provide excellent care for our nursing home residents. I particularly enjoy our Kaiser patient population in the East Bay. These are the elders who assembled our ships during WWII; poured concrete for the Richmond San Rafael Bridge; taught our children; laid bricks for our buildings; and worked in the refineries, canneries, candy factories, and the old Ford Motor plant. Working with these patients gives me a strong sense of the history of the East Bay. Working in the skilled nursing facilities gives me the opportunity to use every bit of my nursing experience and I particularly enjoy the strong collaborative relationship with our department’s outstanding physicians.

I am a member of the National Association of Gerontological Nurse Practitioners, the California Association of Nurse Practitioners, the American College of Nurse Practitioners, and the National Honor Society of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau.

I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, came to San Francisco as part of the youth migration in the early 1960’s. I now live in East Oakland. I have one son who lives in Hayward. My hobbies include hiking, birdwatching, sewing, knitting, and reading. I have a particular interest in the history of nursing. I am also active in community organizations in East Oakland.
