About Me
Having been born in Brooklyn, New York and grown up in New Jersey, my undergraduate training was at Rutgers – The State University. I started my medical studies at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Mexico, and continued my training both in New Jersey and Colorado. This initially began with 3-years residency in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center. During that time, I had decided to combine Internal Medicine with Obstetrics and Gynecology. This entailed completing an additional 4-years Ob/Gyn residency also in New Jersey at Monmouth Medical Center. I still felt medicine and obstetrics was where I should focus my career, and so I decided to begin subspecialty training in High Risk Obstetrics. This Fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine was completed in another 2 years at Denver General Hospital and the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, Colorado.
So, finally after 9 years of specialty training after medical school, I felt it was time to get a job!!! My wife also thought that this was an excellent idea!! We had the opportunity to interview for positions all over the United States, as Maternal-Fetal Medicine was a new subspecialty in Ob/Gyn. After visiting numerous hospitals and universities throughout the country, we discovered that the Kaiser Permanente Medical Group in Oakland was actively seeking to recruit a person with my expertise.
I had no knowledge regarding the Kaiser system prior to our visit, but I was very impressed with the people and staff that I met. My wife and I decided it would be worth trying out the system, and if it was not everything we had hoped for, we
could move on. That was more than 20 years ago!! I am so happy and proud to be a partner in Kaiser Permanente for all of my years in clinical practice.
As I enjoy teaching, I have been fortunate to speak at various Universities and Hospitals on numerous topics in High Risk Obstetrics. I have helped co-author a number of articles that have been published in medical journals and have an active part in the daily teaching of our Ob/Gyn residents and medical students. I have had the honor of receiving teaching awards presented by both The Permanente Medical Group and by the residents in Ob/Gyn at Kaiser Oakland Hospital. My affiliation with medical societies includes membership in the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Fellow and Diplomate in the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, member of the California Medical Association, and member of the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
I am especially proud to be part of a program called Early Start, which first began at Kaiser Oakland Hospital in 1990. As its first Clinical Director here, this program was established to help all prenatal patients have the healthiest baby possible. Specially trained providers counsel patients on how to stop drugs or alcohol use during their pregnancy. Since 1990, Kaiser Permanente has expanded this program to include all of its Northern California facilities. It is one of the premier programs specifically designed to counsel prenatal patients on substance use and abuse during pregnancy. This type of comprehensive and thorough program is almost unheard of in any state or health care system in the entire country.
Although my work as a Perinatologist is very special to me, I still have other outside activities which I make every effort to enjoy. These include golf on my days off, and on the weekends. I enjoy skiing in the winter (only if it is sunny and not too cold)!! And when the opportunity arises, visiting Lake Tahoe, Monterey and Carmel are my favorite places. I have two children, both of whom were born in Kaiser Oakland Hospital.
