Personal Information

I was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States with my parents in 1948 at the age of 18 months. I grew up with my younger brother in Southern California until I attended Stanford University. There I advanced my interests in the life sciences by majoring in biology with the intention of using my knowledge for the benefit of man. My medical school was the University of California, Los Angeles.

I had the good fortune of doing my Internal Medicine internship and residency at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland between 1972 and 1974. There I had an excellent experience in learning what I like to call the “art of practical medicine.” By this I mean the ability to provide excellent care by the use of generally accepted and peer reviewed medical knowledge, common sense, and the appropriate use (and not overuse) of all of the sophisticated medical technologies that are available to us. I am deeply indebted to those staff physicians, especially Dr. Lester Hollander and Dr. Martin Shearn, for this training. At that time in medical history, I do not think that there were many other training programs, especially the university programs, that taught these skills.

When I went into private practice in 1978 in San Jose, I put these skills to use. My patients always expressed their satisfaction with this approach because they had confidence in me and were able to control their medical expenses. When I returned to work at Kaiser Permanente again in 2001, I was gratified to see that the same principles I learned years ago were still being applied.

My wife of more than 35 years is an artist, specializing in landscape watercolors. I have three children and two grandchildren. My son, now in his thirties, is an ophthalmologist in Daly City. My oldest daughter, also in her thirties, is a research scientist in Fort Collins, Colorado. My youngest daughter is a teacher in Fort Collins.

Personal Interests

In addition to my growing family and my work, I enjoy hiking, backpacking, bicycling, skiing, fly-fishing, wine making, gardening, and woodworking.

Medical Practice Interests

My special interests in medicine have evolved over the years. I have practiced pulmonary medicine, critical care medicine, administrative medicine, and internal medicine. I currently continue to practice internal medicine, and I am especially interested in methods to control rising costs of medical care.
