What is my specialty

My speciality is Neurosurgery. This is a specialty in which surgery is used to treat diseases involving the brain and spinal cord. In general, I enjoy all aspects of Neurosurgery although I have special training in complex spine problems, which will require the use of instrumentation. My experience also includes removing brain tumors, treating aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations.

What happens when you are referred to me

As a specialist, I am called upon to see patients that may have medical problems involving the brain and spine for which surgery maybe helpful. On our initial interview I will get a detailed history of your symptoms, examine you and review all X-rays that have been done. At the end of the meeting I will decided if further tests are needed or if surgery is indicated. If surgery is needed we will plan for a date, you will have a pre-operative physical examination and will sign a consent for the procedure. It is very important that you ask questions about the surgery, and all the risks and possible complications are explained to you.

My Practice Philosophy

I believe the practice of medicine is a combination of acquired training, life experiences, good communication skills and common sense. It is a privilege to be asked by someone to participate in his or her care. Hence I will do my best to make sure, we, together; share in the decision making process that will affect your life. Pure and simple, you, the patient, have the information needed to make your diagnosis and it is my function to facilitate the transfer of that information so that I can make an accurate diagnosis. The success of our interview depends on identifying the symptoms, identifying abnormalities in your clinical examination, if any, and matching those symptoms and clinical findings with the MRIs or X-rays so as to determine the treatment plan, be it medical or surgical.

Who am I and how did I end up in neurosurgery

My background has been quite diverse. At an early age, I enjoyed learning biology, and I loved mathematics. So at a young age, I studied both subjects intensely, and at the end of high school, I decided to pursue a degree in engineering. I went to Stanford University and received a master’s degree in Petroleum Engineering; another master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and a Ph.D. also in Petroleum Engineering. On graduation, I went to USC where I was an assistant professor of Petroleum Engineering for 7 years. During that time, my interest in medicine became more intense, and I began doing research in medicine. I entered Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago, and as they say “the rest is history”. I completed my internship at UCSF, my residency and fellowships in neurosurgery at the University of Illinois in Chicago.

After completion of my studies, my first job was as an Assistant Professor of neurosurgery at the University of Illinois in Chicago. I did this for 5 years, training other neurosurgeons as well as doing research on the biomechanics of the spine as well as cerebral blood flow. I believe my background in engineering has allowed me to bring a different prospective to the understanding of the physiology of the spine and brain

I am married, have a Shih Tzu puppy named Bella, and enjoy traveling.
