What I do at Kaiser:

I many times leave my office to visit patients and their families at their homes or other places ( eg.: coffee shops, hospitals). This is a unique aspect of my job. I am an intensive case manager for patients who are challenged with severe mental illness. I do this for patients who are in the Oakland and Richmond Service area. I have been with Kaiser in this position since 2003.

Common diagnoses with which I work include, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder and bipolar disorder. My role is to help patient with extraordinary mental health challenges get engaged with the right services and supports. This may mean getting them connected with our Family Education and Support Group or a weekly Skills Group or with one of our Parity Therapist who will provide on-going case management. This may mean working with their family to help provide a supportive living environment for them or helping them connect with supportive community services.

Why I like my job:

Many of my patients and their families are surprised to learn that even with a diagnosis of Schizophrenia or Bipolar or another serious diagnosis, a person can recover and go on to live a normal, fulfilling life. It is so rewarding for me to work with my unique and interesting patients by bring them hope and help with recovery.

I especially like doing this work at Kaiser because we have so many mental health services and medical services under one roof. I have a multitude of Kaiser colleagues with whom to consult and who can help me provide you with a wide variety of services based on their experience and expertise.

What I like to do when I am not working:

  • Spend time playing with my family
  • Reading all types of books .. fantasy and scifi especially
  • Hiking and rock hounding
  • Vacationing at warm destinations
