About Me

My name is Jesse Adams. I was born in Nashville Tennessee in 1951. I grew up in Camarillo, California, attended college at UC Berkeley, Medical School at Dartmouth in New Hampshire then at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. I completed medical internship and residancy at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, then worked 3 years in medical research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda Maryland. I then returned to Barnes Hospital to complete subspecialty training in Hematology and Oncology before opening a private practice in Red Bluff, California, where I practiced from 1983 until 1992, which was the year I moved to Sacramento and joined Kaiser Permanente. I am now the Chief of Hematology/Oncology at Sacramento and Roseville. My wife is also a physician, and we have three children.

About My Specialty

I am a Hematologist and Oncologist. That means that I treat patients with blood diseases, and also administer chemotherapy to cancer patients. These two specialties are closely connected because the first chemotherapy was developed for cancer of the blood ( leukemia), and because so many of the side effects of chemotherapy affect the blood. I see patients with all of the diseases which fall within these specialties, but the most common are breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer and lymphoma.

My Credentials

Medical school Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO
Internship Washington University Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, MO
Residency National Heart Lung Blood Institute, Bethesda, MD
Fellowship Washington University Barnes Hospital, St. Louis, MO
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine
Board certification Hematology, American Board of Internal Medicine

Why I Chose Hematology/Oncology

People often ask me why I chose to treat such a difficult disease as cancer? My immodest answer is always the same; shouldn't the best doctors go where the need is greatest? Actually Oncology is a wonderful specialty because of the tremendous rate of scientific progress. It is rewarding to deliver a treatment which can extend or even save a life, in a situation where just a few years ago no helpful therapy existed. And when we cannot cure, and death is inevitable, that too is a part of life, and has always been part of being a doctor.

My Practice Philosophy

My philosophy of practice is to strive to care about my patients in the same way that I care about my family and friends. I believe that is the essence of quality medical care.

Why Kaiser Permanente?

I left private practice in 1993 to work with Kaiser Permanente, and I have never regretted that move. Kaiser Permanente is a better way to practice because the doctors are organized to work together efficiently, and because the relationship between the doctors and the insurance payor is harmonious rather than adversarial. It is absolutely true that in my experience the quality of medical care, on average, is better within the Kaiser Permanente system than it is in fee-for-service medicine. Perhaps the greatest reason is that within Kaiser Permanente the important decisions are still made by the doctors, not by insurance executives. My freedom to practice medicine in the way I want to, for the benefit of my patients, is greater within Kaiser Permanente than it would be elsewhere.
