About Me

I graduated from the Medical College of Wisconsin, in Milwaukee, WI. My earliest mentor was John Aussem, in Milwaukee, WI, who showed me what the life of a practicing pathologist was like. I completed residency training in pathology at the University of Washington, in Seattle, WA. An influential mentor in Seattle was J. Bruce Beckwith, who introduced me to pediatric pathology.

Before coming to Kaiser Permanente, I held faculty positions at the University of Michigan and the University of Washington. I also spent a short period of time in the biotechnology industry. During these years, I led the life of a biomedical scientist, teacher, administrator, and physician.

My position at Kaiser Permanente allows me the opportunity to practice perinatal pathology, a subspecialty of pediatric pathology, in a regional laboratory that serves northern California. My mentors have taught me that a pathologist is a part of an interactive, multidisciplinary patient care team. Toward this end, my role is to help colleagues and patients understand the disease processes that affect the fetus, newborn child, and mother.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
