About Me

Welcome to the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center and to my home page! This home page provides you with an opportunity to learn about my background, and for me to share health information with you!

My interest in becoming a physician was influenced by my work with the Chippewa Indians. The summer I spent in Northern Michigan working on a Health Needs Assessment Study of the Chippewa Indians sensitized me to cultural issues and to the disparities in health care delivery in the US. It was very gratifying to support the tribe’s need to establish basic health care services, and I learned a lot from the one-one contact with individuals around health care issues.

Some of the most gratifying aspects of my work as a clinician have been in effectively communicating across cultural and language differences, listening to patients' stories. I have always considered it a great honor to be providing care to my patients. Philosophically, I believe in the importance of self-care and of supporting patients to make effective behavioral changes to improve their health. My medical school experience fostered these values.

During the past 18 years, I have provided primary care to a multi-cultural practice, with a large proportion of Spanish speakers. In addition, I’ve worked to improve language services and health care for non-English speakers. As the Chief of Health Education, I serve as an ambassador between the physicians and health educators. It is rewarding to help patients take a role in their own care to prevent disease and to better manage a chronic condition.

I’ve taken on a greater role working with the Chronic Pain Program, one of Kaiser’s chronic conditions management programs. I love the multi-disciplinary nature of the program and see its richness and value for patients living with complex conditions.

It also takes more than one approach to find a balance between work and one’s personal life! My outside interests include: hiking, cooking, gardening, and traveling. My family and synagogue community are very important to me. I swim daily, take Pilates, and enjoy my early morning walk with the dog!

Please explore the links on this home page; they include such topics as stress management, women’s health, complementary medicine, and preventive approaches to health.

Viva bien!

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
