My Specialty and Why I Chose It.

I am a specialist in the treatment of hand and wrist injuries. I chose this area of specialization because I have always used my own hands intensely for a wide variety of activities and recognize the special importance of the hand in the quality of peoples’ lives. I love to tinker and build things, and, on occasion, my specialty area calls for the fabrication of custom-built splints for my patients.

My Practice Philosophy

I think of myself as a teacher, coach, and cheerleader. Because many hand and wrist injuries require lengthy rehabilitation, it is essential for patients to take a very active and independent role in their own recovery. As most people are very busy, I try hard to give patients easy to follow, but comprehensive instruction for their home programs. I add complexity to the home program as needed to insure a good outcome. There are occasions where hands-on treatment is necessary and I strive to demonstrate respect and build a relationship where patients will have confidence and trust with my hands-on care.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been with Kaiser Permanente in Sacramento since 1987 after completing my Physical Therapy training that same year. I have been involved with my area of specialization nearly from the start of my tenure here.

Why I Like to Practice Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente has provided me with an excellent facility and the support that I have needed to develop my specialty and provide the care that my patients need. Mutual respect and easy, open communication with surgeons and physicians also leads to better patient care. Prompt and easy access to needed patient information through our new electronic medical record is another advantage in providing quality care. Kaiser Permanente is constantly responding to the challenges of modern health care and evolving in ways that allow me to do a good job.

On a Personal Note

I live here in Sacramento with a terrific wife, son, and two dogs. My wife is an accomplished guitar and harp musician. Our son is full of talent and a true joy to us. We have family and friends all over the US and travel when we can for both visiting and vacation. Personally, I love the Sierra Nevada, have done extensive hiking and skiing in the Sierra, and make an effort to do some hiking every year.

I have been involved in numerous sports as well and try to stay active year round. Fortunate to live close to work, I commute by bicycle as often as I can. I love to work with my hands; building, fixing, and tinkering, and with a musician wife, certainly appreciate the need to keep our hands in good working order!
