Greetings, it is both a privilege and a pleasure to provide this home page information about my practice and myself so that you can get to know me better and have access to useful we links that I hope you will find informative.

My Qualifications

I was born and raised in Westchester County, New York. I received my undergraduate degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado-Boulder and my medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. I completed my internship and Ophthalmology residency at the University of California, Davis followed by a Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus fellowship at the University of Iowa. I am certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO). I joined the Permanente Medical Group in 1990 and established the Pediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Ocular Motility Service for the North Valley Region. I am Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at UC Davis and have received an award for outstanding clinical teaching. I specialize in pediatric and adult motility disorders, cataract surgery, retinopathy of prematurity and the use of Botulinum toxin in the treatment of facial dystonia and strabismus. I have published numerous papers and given lectures and presentations at professional conferences in my field. I am a member of the Pediatric Eye Disease Investigator Group, a past president of the Alta Eye Society, a past member of the Sacramento El Dorado Medical Society Board, President-elect for the California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and Chair-elect for the American Academy of Pediatrics Section of Ophthalmology .

My Healthcare Practice

As a specialist in Ophthalmology and a sub-specialist in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, my goal is to provide the highest quality care possible to my patients. I believe every patient is entitled to the same care and respect that I would want one of my family members to receive from their doctor. I particularly enjoy practicing at Kaiser, where as a sub-specialist, I make the calls on what studies to order, when and how to intervene for my patients. I do not have any conflicts-of-interest such as a positive or negative financial incentive to order studies or perform surgeries. Such freedom is rare in today’s medical environment. I enjoy a very eclectic subspecialty and enjoy the privilege of treating patients ranging in age from 24 weeks post conception to 100 years old. I see a large population of challenging cases that includes retinopathy of prematurity, pediatric, adolescent and adult cataract surgery, strabismus surgery and rare genetic conditions that affect the eye. I chose this specific field because we can actually make a lot of patients better! Aside from English, I speak minimal French.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente is a pre-paid INTEGRATED MANAGED CARE SYSTEM. As such, our patients enjoy unbiased opinions on treatment options from expert physicians and are provided with comprehensive prevention and treatment options. For example, I can send out one e-mail to communicate with all my referring pediatricians to ensure that they refer a particular eye condition appropriately and similarly they can contact me with ease. Communication is the key to good medicine and in an integrated system there are better opportunities for communication and a team-based approach to improving your or your family members’ health.

My Outside Interests

I have three children and too many hobbies and interests to list, but I particularly enjoy squash, skiing, wood-working, and composing music. I have also felt privileged to participate in overseas mission eye surgery.

Be sure to visit the New Kaiser Permanente Website for additional information regarding appointments, prescriptions, health education classes and other health-related topics. You can also click on my department link above to receive additional health information.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
