My Qualifications

My name is Jim Hine. I am a native Californian and grew up in the South Bay. After attending High School in Sunnyvale, I did my undergraduate work at U C Berkeley. My medical school training was from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and I returned to U.C. Davis for my internship. My ophthalmology residency was at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. I am board certified in ophthalmology and a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the California Medical Association, the Sacramento Medical Society, and the local ALTA Ophthalmology Organization.

My Medical Practice

Being a physician gives me the privilege of helping people to live a better life. I was drawn to a surgical specialty because it allows me to combine science and technology as well as working with my hands. It is a great privilege to have another person trust me to perform their surgery. It is immensely satisfying to improve someone’s life with surgery. Ophthalmology holds special appeal as while limited to a specific area of the body, it allows me to treat a wide range of diseases as well as patients of all ages.

Why I Choose Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 1978, straight out of my residency. My family had been cared for by Kaiser Permanente while I was growing up and our family had been very pleased with that care. I was eager to practice medicine where my decisions were not influenced by a patient’s ability to pay or their particular insurance company. I value the wealth of information available to me from my large group of excellent colleagues. The physicians at Kaiser Permanente are not only extremely bright and talented but truly patient focused. With a simple phone call, I can easily contact an expert in any field regarding a complex case.

I was Chief of Ophthalmology in Sacramento from 1984 thru 2006. This has allowed me to recruit staff and physicians that I am extremely proud to work with. The structure of our medical group allowed me to lead this department yet still spend 80% of my time in clinical practice. I now enjoy a full clinical practice.

Life Away From My Practice

I have been married to my best friend since 1974. We have four grown children who make their parents proud. My hobbies include skiing, bicycling, backpacking, triathlons, fishing, and almost any activity that gets me outside. I also volunteer to provide free surgery locally and abroad in order to assist those underserved or unable to pay for healthcare.
