About Me

I was raised in the Panama Canal Zone where my parents were physicians in the local hospital. As my parents were from Latin America, we spoke Spanish at home. Growing up in a middle class neighborhood made me appreciate the value of family, friends and hard work. I majored in Physics and Chemistry at Tulane University in New Orleans, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1976. Although I had originally planned to pursue a career in physics, as time went on, it became clear to me that I belonged in Medicine. I attended the Tulane University Medical School from 1976-1980 and did my residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at UCSF from 1980-1984. I have been happily practicing Ob/GYN at Oakland Kaiser since then.

Why Ob/GYN? I had initially planned on going into General Surgery. This changed after my Ob/GYN rotation in medical school. I found great personal satisfaction in welcoming a new life into the world. Within this specialty, I could also be a personal provider, practice endocrinology and infertility and perform many different surgical procedures. I found that I had a special sensitivity and interest in feminine topics such as PMS, menopause and pregnancy. Why not Ob/GYN!

My personal interests include participating in the lives of my 10- and 13-year-old boys and playing with our very active yellow labrador retriever. I love listening to music and playing the guitar and piano. I am developing a hobby in digital photography and photo-editing. I also have 2 telescopes and enjoy watching the planets and deep sky objects.

If you choose me as your Ob/GYN provider, I will do my best to be available to answer your questions and provide excellent medical care. I believe that most questions can be answered by the advice personnel, but I will be happy to speak with you or call you back to personally discuss the situation with you. I also welcome your e-mail through E-mail your doctor on this page. I promise to maintain your medical information confidentially and will only discuss this with others if you permit me to. I am in clinic most days of the week, so making a timely appointment to see me should not be a problem. Looking forward to being your health care provider.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
