My Qualifications

I was born in Berkeley, California. I graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a BS in biochemistry. After earning my medical degree from Stanford University, I completed my internship and residencies in internal medicine and neurology with the Strong Memorial Hospital at the University of Rochester in New York. I am board certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. I am board certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. I have been with Kaiser Permanente since 1979, and I currently serve as Physician-in-Chief for the North Valley.

My Healthcare Practice

My professional interests include neurorehabilitation and adult neurology.

About Me

I have four grown children: Paul, Eric, John, and Mary Ann. Paul is a Neonatologist with the University of Colorado's Neonatology Group doing both research and clinical practice. Eric is an entering law student at the University of San Francisco. John is a Special Education high school teacher in Sacramento, and Mary Ann just graduated form the University of British Columbia in Forrestry and is joining the San Bernadino National Forrestry Association to direct their Forest Care project in the Lake Arrowhead area. Paul and his wife Brenda have three children: Maggie, 6 years old; Ella, 4 years old; and Charlie, 2 years old.

My Outside Interests

When not practicing medicine, I can be found spending time with my kids and/or grandkids, hiking, cycling or fishing along the American River. I enjoy visiting Lake Tahoe and spending time at Dillon Beach. More recently, I've enjoyed traveling with occasional trips to the East Coast.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
