My Qualifications

I joined Kaiser Permanente and began practicing at Fairfield in 1990. Previously I worked in a private practice in Utah and prior to that I managed a clinic for CIGNA Healthplan in Phoenix. I chose to join Kaiser because I was convinced that it offered the best possible practice environment. Over the intervening years the organization has become a model for the nation in how to deliver high quality and cost effective medical care. I attended medical school at the University of Minnesota, where I was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honorary Medical Society. After graduation I completed a three year residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Colorado and the University of Minnesota. I am board certified in Internal Medicine, which means that I have completed the necessary training and examinations required by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Additionally,I participate in ongoing medical education. Besides practicing medicine, I enjoy sailing, running, hiking with my wife Heidi and German Shepherd "Louie” and baseball, in particular the San Francisco Giants. My wife and I have three children who are currently all in college. My philosophy of medical care is centered on respect for the individual and their preferences while emphasizing evidence based, proven strategies of health promotion and disease prevention.

I believe that continuity of care is vital and that everyone should have a primary care physician who understands them and their medical needs. My long term medical relationships with patients have given me great satisfaction and have taught me at least as much as my formal medical training. In addition to my medical practice I have served as Fairfield’s Physician in charge since 1995 and am also an Assistant Physician in Chief for the Napa Solano Service Area which includes Vallejo, Napa, Vacaville and Fairfield.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
