About Me

I am an anesthesiologist. This means I provide care to patients undergoing surgical and other procedures who require anesthesia or sedation with monitoring. Either I provide this care directly or supervise Certified Registered Nurse Anesthestists (CRNAs).

I discovered this specialty in medical school, during my surgical rotation. The operating room is a fascinating "other world"! I found that I enjoy playing the role of "guardian angel" for anesthetized patients. I also enjoy clinical pharmacology and the fact that I can usually learn the outcome of my own contribution to the patient's procedure before the end of my work day. After several decades I am still fascinated by the fact that an anesthetized person can be essentially comatose at breakfast time and eating lunch with his family a few hours later. Although my personal interactions with patients is less than that of a surgeon or other clinician, it can be very intense and meaningful to the patient. I consider pre-operative patient education and putting their minds at ease as important as maintaining their health and safety during surgery.

My Healthcare Practice

I enjoy my work, as I have for 20 years. I take my responsibility for patient care very seriously, and work part time to ensure I can give my “all” to both my professional and family lives. I chose this specific field of medicine because I enjoy the intense, short-term aspects of patient care, and I find satisfaction in (usually) playing a supportive role in the operating room.

My practice philosophy is to allow the patients to trust me and the others who take care of them. At some point they have to decide to yield control to others and I am honored (I known that sounds like a strange word) to be their guide and protector as they allow themselves to be transported into the sometimes spooky world of surgery. For me, drugs and technical stuff are as much art as science. It's very satisfying to chaperone patients from a state requiring nearly total control of their vital signs to a state of self-control, wakefuless, and comfort.

I practice at Morse Avenue, Roseville, and the Rancho Cordova Eye Surgery Center. I am a member of the Sacramento/El Dorado County Medical Society, and the International Anesthesia Research Society. I am currently the chief of Anesthesia Quality Assurance in my department.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

I've been part of Kaiser Permanente for 21 years. This has been my one and only job since I finished my training, and I never even thought about practicing elsewhere. In this medical group, I am supported by an excellent system that allows me to practice medicine, not business. The co-operative aspects of my relationships with other physicians (in and out of my department) is very satisfying. It’s a pleasure for me and a definite advantage to our patients.

As a Permanente physician I have great freedom to practice the way I want. Physician decisions are made by physicians, not by administrators or insurance agents. I am proud to point out that Kaiser Permanente was one of the first proponents of creating a system of medical quality assurance, which became a standard for the industry many years ago.

As a salaried employee, I have no personal financial interest in doing anything that I don't firmly believe is in the best medical interest of the patient. As a member of a large medical group, I see a wonderful variety of surgical patients, and I can share the experiences and expertise of my colleagues, who are always available for consultation and discussion. This is a good thing, since the facility at Morse Avenue is a regional referral center for pediatric surgery, neurosurgery, high-risk obstetrics, scoliosis surgery, and other specialties.

The medical group allows me to work part time, which keeps me fresh and rested.

My Outside Interests

I am married to a South Sacramento Kaiser Permanente surgeon, and we have three children. In my spare time, I enjoy exercise, sailing, horticulture, and history. When I retire from my medical career, I intend to become a middle school or high school teacher of science and/or history.
