My Qualifications

I was born in Turlock, California. Growing up, I lived in Kansas, Missouri, and Arizona. I graduated from Pasadena College (now located in San Diego as Point Loma Nazarene University) with a major in Chemistry and Biology. I completed my medical degree in Southern California in 1970 and an internship in Tacoma, Washington. My radiology residency was at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center, Denver, Colorado. I was the Chief (and only) Radiologist at the Army Medical Hospital, West Point, New York from 1974-1977. I then moved to Sacramento to join Kaiser Permanente.

Many changes have occurred in Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento, since I joined the staff almost 28 years ago. We initially were a small staff of seven radiologists at one hospital.

Now we are over 30 radiologists at 2 hospitals and many clinics. During this time, I have served as Chief of the Department for 6 years, assistant chief several times, section chief of ultrasound for 26 years and section chief of breast imaging for 13 years. I have served as secretary of the medical staff. I was a member of the medical imaging equipment committee for the entire Northern California region of Kaiser Permanente for 17 years. I, also, served as Chairman of the Chiefs of Radiology for Northern California Kaiser Permanente.

Professionally, I am a member of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), the Society of Breast Imaging, the Radiologicial Society of North America, the California Radiological Society, as well as the local medical society.

My Healthcare Practice

I am a diagnostic radiologist who specializes in reviewing and interpreting images of the body. This includes routine xrays, computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound. I consider my subspecialty breast imaging and interventional breast diagnosis. When I was receiving my basic medical training, I was captivated by what a radiologist could tell about a patient from reviewing xrays. The technical aspect of the practice of a radiologist was fascinating to me. Since my basic radiology training, new techniques have gradually been added to my abilities to help patients.

Image-guided breast biopsy equipment has been developed in the past ten years. Since our department needed someone to specialize in breast imaging, I was attracted to this aspect of medical imaging. It was natural to add breast biopsies to my practice. This involves imaging of a suspected abnormality in the breast, either on a mammogram or under ultrasound and using specialized equipment and biopsy needles to obtain tissue samples through a small incision to make sure cancer is not present. This procedure has become the most enjoyable part of my practice. The chance to interact personally with my patients is a real joy and challenge. Almost all of these patients are nervous and scared, both of the procedure and the outcome. The challenge is for me and my assistants to help the patient get through the procedure with as little trauma as possible. This is done through a personalized approach involving getting to know the patient and utilizing humor as well as compassion.

Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

Practicing medicine at Kaiser Permanente has steadily improved in its quality in service to our patients. I have always been happy for the freedom to practice the best medicine I knew how. That has not changed. I am free to do the best for the patient without obtaining prior approval from a committee or administrator. My patients know I am not motivated by increased salary when I recommend a certain action.

About Me

I have been married to my wife for 38 years. We have two sons (and daughters-in-laws). Our oldest son is a Radiologist in Phoenix, Arizona. He and his wife have our two grandchildren: Matt, age 4, and Olivia, age 1. With a little coaxing, I can show you pictures. Our youngest son is involved with a website, also in Phoenix. You can see his work on BetterPhoto.com. He and his wife are still contemplating children.

My wife and I are both active in music, mainly in our church. I play trombone in our church orchestra. My wife sings in the choir. She just retired as the administrative assistant to our Music Minister. My other interests are playing with my home computer, photography, and playing a little golf. Hopefully, as I get nearer retirement, golf can become a more frequent activity.

I am hoping this Home Page gives you a little insight into who I am, what I do, where I’ve been, and what I am involved in outside of my hours at the hospital.
