My Specialty and Why I chose It

I am an Internist meaning I specialize in Adult Primary Care. I enjoy the challenges that my specialty presents.

The scope of my practice ranges from seeing critically ill patients in the inpatient setting to dealing with chronic but stable conditions like diabetes, hypertension, coronary artery disease and asthma, to name a few. I enjoy the continuity of care that I am able to provide to my patients through my specialty.

My Credentials

Medical school Government Medical College, Punjab, India
Residency Newark Beth Israel Medical Center, Newark, NJ
Board certification Internal Medicine, American Board of Internal Medicine

My Practice Philosophy

I believe that my patients come to discuss their medical issues and problems with me, therefore; I make a conscious effort to listen to them. I believe that medical care is a team effort. The team consists of the patient and his/her physician. I like to give my patients options rather than imposing my decisions on them. The majority of the patients that I see on a regular basis have chronic medical conditions, i.e. diabetes, hypertension, which require long-term, lifestyle changes as a major part of their management. That is why the patient is a primary player of the medical team. I believe that I, as their doctor, am there to coach and guide them through with my medical knowledge and experience but it is the patient that has to execute the plan in order to achieve their health-related goals.

I see patients in my clinic:

Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.
Thursday1:30 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Friday8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2005.

Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente

After completing my residency training in 2001, I practiced with small medical groups in Sacramento and then joined Kaiser Permanente in 2005. I am very pleased with the choice that I made. I feel very satisfied professionally. It is a blessing to have access to the best diagnostic tools without the hassle of submitting authorizations to the approval committees like I had to do in the private practice arena. Kaiser puts their doctors in command when it comes to patient care. If I feel that x/y/z procedure or test is needed for my patient, all I need to do is order it and it gets done. Another thing that impressed me regarding this organization is the amazing teamwork amongst the colleagues. The camaraderie rather than competition amongst the “Kaiser docs” is very beneficial for the patient. If I need to seek specialty opinion regarding a particular problem, all I need to do is call a colleague and discuss the case while my patient waits in the exam room. The patient gets access to not only their primary care but also to the specialists at the same point of service. The constant exchange of information through our almost daily physician conferences helps me enrich my knowledge and keeps me up to speed with this ever-changing field of medicine.

On Personal Note…

I grew up in Punjab, which is a part of northern India. I have been in the United States since 1996. I am married and love spending time with my 2 children.
