About Me
In medical school, it was remarked to me that a pathologist is the doctor’s doctor, or the foundation of medicine. Puzzled at first, I soon realized the meaning of these statements. We work closely with our clinical and surgical colleagues to provide the very best patient care, rendering pathologic diagnoses on surgical specimens, helping interpret a constellation of laboratory data or providing pathology review and instruction at interdepartmental clinical conferences. So although we may not see patients often, we are usually intimately involved with the overall management and care of patients.
My experiences and training before arriving in the East Bay have been varied. My post medical school training included a naval internship, undersea medical training in Groton, CT and subsequent assignment as the Undersea Medical Officer at Submarine Squadron 7 in Pearl Harbor, HI for three years. I returned to the East Coast and completed a residency in pathology and fellowship in cytopathology at the University of Vermont. I was an assistant professor in anatomic pathology at UVM for two years, while my wife, Maria, completed residency training in radiology at the UVM. We moved to California for fellowship reasons, but settled in the East Bay, enamored with the opportunity to join 2 outstanding departments in Pathology and Radiology. We both feel fortunate to work with the highly skilled and dedicated physicians at the Oakland Medical Center.
Although boarded in anatomic and clinical pathology, I am predominantly a surgical and cytopathologist with fellowship training in neuropathology. I also have a particular interest in lung pathology, having spent a 3-month combined sabbatical at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, MA with Dr. Eugene Mark.
My outside interests include spending as much time as possible with our two growing children and their ever evolving activities. I also enjoy reading, traveling, outdoor activities including biking and running and watching my favorite pro team, the PACK, whenever possible.
