My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a family physician. This means I have had broad training in wellness and illness through all stages of life. I chose this field of medicine because I enjoy the diversity of challenges I see every day. The variety of problems that I see means that there is never a dull or routine day. I also have the privilege of working with people over long periods of time and getting to know them very well. Not only does this help me in managing their health issues, but these relationships are one of the most rewarding aspects of being a family doctor.

My Practice Philosophy

I believe the best way to stay healthy is for a doctor and patient to work together as a team. My responsibility is to stay up to date with the latest medical research and ideas, and to separate solid, evidence based information from the latest fad or hype. I can then be an objective source of information for my patients, helping them wade through all of the information available to them about health and disease, to make the best choices.

It is vital to focus on prevention and helping people make choices that work for them and promote their health. I think clear communication is very important and patients need to be comfortable asking their doctor questions. As a doctor, it is important that I create an atmosphere where people are comfortable asking questions.

My Tenure With Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in 2006, after leaving a small group practice in Grass Valley, CA. I was immediately impressed by the patient-oriented focus at Kaiser Permanente. This was a big change from my previous experience.

Why I practice medicine at Kaiser Permanente

I enjoy practicing at Kaiser Permanente because of the incredible support I get and the tools I am given to be the best doctor I can be. The electronic medical record system makes managing labs, office visits, and consultations with other doctors very easy, which in turn improves the quality of care I can provide. The other doctors on staff work together and support one another, and it is easy to go to one of my colleagues if I have questions or want another opinion about a difficult issue. As a whole, the leadership of Kaiser Permanente is focused on continuing to improve the quality of care we provide and it's great to be on a team of people who share that goal. Finally, working at Kaiser Permanente has made the practice of medicine much easier. Everything from ordering prescriptions to ordering labs and getting consults from specialists, is simple and straightforward.

On a Personal Note

After finishing residency in Los Angeles, I practiced briefly in Humboldt County before moving to Grass Valley, where I practiced for 10 years. I continue to live in that area with my 3 children.

In my free time I enjoy several outdoor activities including hiking and camping, fishing, and skiing. I am also an amateur astrophotographer, photographing the night sky through a small telescope. Over the last few years I've had the privilege to be involved with a health clinic and hospital in southwestern Uganda. I've traveled to the area twice to work there and it has been one of the most fascinating and rewarding experiences of my career. Each time I have taken one of my children with me and we have had some incredible experiences together. I hope to be able to return regularly in the future.
