About Me
I am new to Kaiser and to California, but I have been practicing perinatal pathology since I began my residency training in 1988. In medical school, I especially enjoyed studying anatomy, physiology, and genetics, and I was intrigued by the challenge of complex diagnosis. I did my pathology residency in a hospital with a very busy, high-risk, obstetric and prenatal diagnosis practice, where I discovered that perinatal pathology would allow me to bring all my interests together in a useful way.
In my work to date, I have specialized in postmortem examinations of stillborns, newborns and children and in the diagnostic examination of the placenta. I also have a special interest in the pathology of congenital heart disease. There are several goals of this kind of work. The most obvious is to provide parents and clinicians with an explanation for a pregnancy complication or loss, or for a child’s death. In some cases, however, the most important purpose for the examination is to help in determining the potential for recurrence of a disorder in the family. Often, the information gained from placental exam and/or autopsy can help plan future pregnancies, and sometimes can guide the care of other people in the family who may be affected by the same genetic disease. The emotional challenge in doing autopsies has been offset by the rewards of providing this vital information for parents and clinicians.
When I am away from work, I enjoy making stoneware pottery, woodworking, gardening, spending time with my wife and kids, and walking with the dog.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
