About Me

I am a Senior Physician in the Santa Clara Department of Psychiatry and recently celebrated my 25th year with Kaiser. I completed undergraduate studies at the University of California at Davis medical school, at Northwestern University and my psychiatry residency at the San Mateo County Mental Health Services. I have also published several articles in psychiatric journals and books.

My clinical practices focus on the use of pharmacological agents in a primarily adult patient population but I am experienced in most areas of shorter term psychiatric evaluation and treatment modalities.

I am married and have four children and in my non-Kaiser hours my hobbies include collecting American coins and antiquing.

The easiest way to contact me for non-urgent messages is to use my email: Fred.Bittikofer@kp.org. You can also leave a message with the receptionist or on my voice mail by calling the clinic at (408) 945-2915.

After hours you can still call the Psychiatry Clinic. You will be put through to the Psychiatry After Hours Call Center. They have well-trained staff who can be very helpful.

I encourage you to use the zero refill system if possible. We are quite efficiant at dealing with these requests and will usually be able to OK the refill the day we receive it. Remember to order your medications a few days before you run out and not wait until the last minute.

Also, new mail order refills are very convenient - no waiting in line! Check into details at the pharmacy or at members.kp.org.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
