About Me

I was born in China. I received my general and medical education in Hong Kong. I was the top medical graduate from the University of Hong Kong in 1978. I completed my training in both Internal Medicine and Neurology in Hong Kong and in England. I am a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and Hong Kong College of Physicians. I am also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in addition to be a Member or the Royal Colleges of Physicians of UK.

I came to the US in 1995. I went through another neurology residency and I became Board Certified in Neurology. I have special interest in the care of stroke patients and I became certified in the subspecialty of Vascular Neurology during the first year of establishment of the Vascular Neurology Board in the nation. Our hospitals have been certified as Primary Stroke Centers since 2005. We received the Gold Award from the American Stroke Association Get With the Guielines Program. I am a consultant to the National Multiple Scerosis Society and I have most MS patients under my care within Northern California Kaiser.

I joined Kaiser in 1999 as a neurologist. I am proud to have been nominated as one of the "top doctors" by Sacramento Magazine in 2004. I am also listed by the Consumers' Research Council of America in the "Guide to America's Top Physicians" 2004-2005 Edition.

PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS

My Healthcare Practice

As a neurologist in clinical practice for about 30 years, I believe in managing each of my patients as an individual rather than a “case". I strongly believe that the practice of medicine is more an art than science. For some one who has practiced in different countries, I can understand the influence of different cultural and ethnic influences on both the health and diseases of individuals. I enjoy sharing my personal experience with my patients. I enjoy learning about my patients' interesting experiences when I meet with them. I always encourage my patients to learn more from other resources, especially the internet. Their input and questions are important driving forces for me to stay current with my medical knowledge.

I always want my patients to receive the best personal care. I do not request inappropriate or unnecessary tests for my patients. Some of my patients may not like this fact yet that is the way I will treat my own family members. Even a simple CT scan may expose my patients to unnecessary radiation! I would encourage my patients to communicate with me through secure messaging e-mails. I am good at returning my e-mails.

Receiving Your Healthcare From Kaiser Permanente

One of the advantages of the Kaiser system is the team approach. Physicians, medical assistants, nurses, and support staff all work in a team fashion to provide the best care for the patients. Working in Kaiser, I can make all the decisions on my patient care. I do not have to spend my time and effort to get approvals and appeal denials.

Besides speaking English with a heavy Chinese and British accent, I also speak Chinese (fluent Cantonese, some Manderin and Chiuchow).

My Outside Interests

When I’m not working, I enjoy spending time with my family. My wife, whom I married over 28 years ago, is a homemaker. We have two boys. Our older boy is in Boston pursuing his graduate study in Philosophy at Tufts University. Our younger son is staying close to us by attending UC Berkeley. My family is the main reason I moved to the US yet I love every minute of staying in an empty nest right now. I love playing golf especially when my wife plays with me. You can easily tell how my game is when people keep asking me if I can beat my wife. It is certainly more difficult than practicing neurology! I also enjoy teaching.
