My Practice Subspecialty

I help patients who are in need of artificial hips or artificial knees. Usually this is because the joint has worn out from gradual wear and tear, and is chronically inflamed, stiff and painful. This is called osteoarthritis. Very rarely, someone who already has had an artificial joint needs it redone, due to wear, loosening or infection. I can help them as well.

There have been many new developments in the field of joint replacement surgery -- new materials, new implants, new techniques. The information you get from your friends and neighbors, in the media and online varies widely in clarity and veracity. I would be happy to help you sort it out and help you decide what is your best option based on your individual situation.

My Practice Philosophy

I agree with the Mayo slogan "the patient always comes first". Please know that I do care about you very deeply. The medical and surgical decisions that I make all spring from my sincere desire to help you get better.

I also believe strongly in the mind-body relationship. You will do better after your surgery if you are confident and feel good about your surgical and perioperative team, and are calm and well rested. I will strive to answer all of your questions and put your mind at ease.

It gives me great personal satisfaction to improve the lives of people who are suffering from daily pain and who are struggling with basic daily tasks. Occasionally one of my patients will go from requiring a wheelchair to walking without any aids. This is when I feel so very lucky to be doing what I do.

About Me

I was born and raised in Minnesota because my granduncle was a tuberculosis researcher at Mayo Clinic in the 1940's. I graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in Mathematics and Economics far too young at 19 years old. I travelled abroad for several years before returning home and completing medical school. I finished residency at UCSF in 2001, fellowship at Mayo in 2006 and joined Kaiser in 2007.

My personal motto is "if you're not giving, you're not living". Another one I like is "its not joy that makes you grateful, its gratitude that makes you joyful". My wife will occasionally remind me that I am "too blessed to be stressed". I am happily married with a son and a daughter, who amaze me on a daily basis. I enjoy tennis, reading nonfiction, and eating huge bowls of fresh fruit.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
