Scheduling an Appointment to see a Mental Health Professional for the First Time:

Making the decision to get help for the first time is easy. Just call 510-752-1075 to schedule an appointment. You do not need a referral from your primary care doctor. You will be asked to briefly describe your concern to figure out if you need to see a psychiatrist about medications, a therapist for talk therapy, or both. If there is a particular doctor or therapist you would like to see, say so!

What to Expect at Our First Appointment

During our initial meeting, I will ask you to tell me what is bringing you into the clinic. And, I will ask you to tell me about your background so that we can develop a better understanding of your concerns. You and I will then together decide whether or not medications may be helpful to you.

Beyond meeting with me for medication management, you may be seen by the Kaiser Oakland Department of Psychiatry's psychologists and social workers for group therapy or short-term individual therapy. If necessary, I may recommend that you meet with your primary care physician or other medical specialists. Or, you may be referred to the Kaiser Oakland Chemical Dependency Recovery Program (CDRP) for alcohol and drug counseling. In addition to prescribing medications, I may recommend that you get bloodwork tests. And, I will help you navigate your way through the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center to make sure that you receive the best care available. I am fortunate to be supported by phenomenal colleagues and a comprehensive medical system at Kaiser.

Return Appointments:

I suggest you schedule follow-up appointments with me at the time of each visit. If you wait to make an appointment, I may not be able to schedule you for an appointment as soon as we would like.

Questions or Concerns Between Appointments:

Between our scheduled appointment times, please call our Psychiatric Nursing Advice Phone line (510-752-6660) during working hours if you have any questions or concerns. We have 4 fantastic registered nurses (Donna, Ginger, Kathy, and Patricia) who work full-time in our clinic. They are all specially trained in psychiatry and very well prepared to help assess mental health symptoms and provide advice, as appropriate. The nurses' office is located 3 doors down from my own office and they will let me know each and every time you call. The nurses and I will determine if it is something we can handle by phone or if you need to come in for an appointment with me, your therapist, or a crisis clinician.

Help me to Protect the Quality of Your Healthcare

You may receive a survey in the mail about your experience with the Kaiser Oakland Department of Psychiatry. Please complete and return the survey. Don't hesitate to complete the survey more than once if you receive it after different appointments. This survey helps me and the clinic protect the quality of your care. Any rating other than "very good" or "excellent" tells us that we have not done a good enough job managing your mental health concerns!

A Word about the Kaiser Oakland Laboratories

Laboratory Tests:

If I recommend that you get bloodwork checked, you do not need any appointment at the Laboratory. You do not even need a 'lab slip'. It's all computerized (here at Kaiser Permanente, we like to save trees!). You may go to:

  • the laboratory in the basement of the main hospital
  • from 7AM – 7PM on weekdays.
  • from 8AM to 1PM on weekends.

  • the laboratory on the 2nd floor of the Fabiola building
  • from 8AM – 5:15PM on weekdays.
  • The Fabiola 2nd Floor Laboratory is closed on weekends.

Remember, if you are getting a blood level tested for Lithium, Depakote (Valproic Acid), or Tegretol (Carbamazepine) you should get the test done 12 hours after your last dose of the medicine.

And, if you are getting a fasting blood sugar or a fasting lipid panel (cholesterol test), you should not have anything by mouth except water for 12 hours before the test.

Please call the Psychiatric Nursing Advice Line (510-752-6660) if you have any questions about the Laboratory Services.

Cancelling an Appointment:

Please call 510-752-6348 to cancel an appointment via our automated phone service. If you would like to cancel and reschedule an appointment, then please call 510-752-1075.

Directions to Kaiser Oakland Medical Center Department of Psychiatry:
