My Biography

I was born and raised in Fresno,California. During my childhood, we had cattle and horses on our ranch and I learned to break horses when I was 12. In college, music and oboe was a large part of my life and I still play the harpsichord. In 1975, I graduated from Stanford University Phi Beta Kappa with an BA in Human Biology with Distinction. My Medical Degree was received in 1979 from the University of California at San Francisco, where I was also a Phi Beta Kappa scholar. My first internship was in Pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of San Francisco, as I was interested initially in Pediatric Cardiology. I then chose my second internship in Internal Medicine at the Cleveland Clinic, a center of international cardiology excellence. My Internal Medicine training was finished at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.,followed by a cardiology fellowship at George Washington University, also in Washington, D.C. Following my fellowship, I joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Lipid Research Clinic at George Washington University where I published my first research on the treatment of Hypercholesterolemia.

My special expertise is in Echocardiography, Population Management and Hyperlipidemia. I am a Fellow of both the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. My appointment as a Clinical Professor of Medicine on the Stanford University faculty is in recognition of my national reputation in the fields of Cardiac Disease Prevention and Population Management, both in research and clinical work.

I joined The Permanente Medical Group in 1989. From 1993 through 2006, I was the Chief of Cardiology at Santa Clara, and from 1998 to 2006, the Chair of the Chiefs of Cardiology of Northern California. In addition to my role as Director of the Cholesterol Clinic and the Physician Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory, I am currently the Director of Medical Center Strategic Projects in Managed Care. I am also the Physician Manager of the Multifit (Cardiac rehabilitation) Programs throughout Northern California.

Besides being listed in the Best Doctors in San Jose of San Jose Magazine, I am listed in the Best Doctors in the USA in Consumer's Checkbook. My awards include the NCQA (National Committe of Quality Assurance) Award for Excellence in Cardiac Care and the Exceptional Contribution Award from The Permanente Medical Group for exceptional work in cardiovascular care.

I speak medical Spanish and French. My husband is an endocrinologist and Advising Dean at Stanford Medical School. We have 3 sons: one teen in high school, one in college and one graduated from college and working. I'm an avid reader and enjoy my three book clubs. Exercising every day is important to me and I practice what I preach about healthy lifestyles.
