About Me
Hi. My name is Douglas Patch. I’m an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in joint replacement surgery. I grew up in the Midwest, attended medical school at Georgetown University in DC, and then did my residency training in orthopedic surgery at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. After training I practiced as a joint replacement specialist at the National Naval Medical Center in the DC area as an officer in the US Naval Medical Corps. After completing my military obligation I moved to Boston, Massachusetts. During most of the time I lived in Boston I was in private practice at New England Baptist Hospital. While practicing there among some of the country’s most distinguished joint replacement specialists, I refined my techniques in knee and hip replacement surgery. After sixteen years I decided it was time to leave Boston. The long, cold winters there got to me. So did the business side of medicine.
I moved to the Bay area because it’s warm here, and beautiful too! I joined Kaiser because I can do my work as a surgeon and leave the business side of medicine to others. The Kaiser model also appealed to me because in this system the interests of doctors, hospitals and the insurance industry are cooperative, not competitive like they are in private practice. The Kaiser system also seems genuinely committed to the goal of providing its service members the highest quality of patient care. That’s my commitment too.
As a Kaiser surgeon I am free to focus on my true professional passion: helping patients crippled by knee or hip arthritis to walk again--often with little if any pain. This makes patients very happy. Me too. I have a great job!
