About Me

I chose General Medicine because I enjoy the combination of practicing disease prevention and working up difficult-to-diagnose conditions. I try to treat patients and their families the same way I'd like my family to be treated. I also try to be available to call-back patients as soon as possible during the busy day, and to keep patients apprised as to how their diagnostic workups are going.

I have been with Kaiser since 1991. I like the congeniality of group practice and not having to worry about the business aspects of running a practice. I also believe in the integration of care and the strong emphasis on disease prevention at Kaiser.

I was born in New York City and raised in Southern California. I moved to Michigan for medical school. After four years there, I returned to California and have lived in the Bay Area since 1972. I had a private practice in San Leandro from 1975-1991. I was the Chief of Medicine and Chief of Staff at Doctors Hospital of San Leandro from 1978-1984. At Kaiser Oakland, I was Chief of Utilization Management from 1997-2001. I have been an Assistant Physician-In-Chief for Oakland Medical Center since 1999 and Chief of Medicine since 2001. I am a member of the Alameda-Contra Costa County Medical Association and the California Medical Association. I also enjoy teaching Berkeley and UCSF medical students.

I am fortunate to have married a wonderful woman, who is a school teacher, and have four great children, two sons and identical twin daughters, all now grown.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
