If you are reading my web page, then chances are you have a child in the hospital, and this is a very difficult time for you. Hopefully, this web page will give you a little better idea who is taking care of your child.

My Qualifications

I went to high school here in Sacramento at Rio Americano High School and then did my undergraduate work in Physiology at UC Davis. I attended medical school and completed my pediatric residency in southern California. I served as Chief Resident of the pediatric program.

I’ve been with Kaiser Permanente since 1991. I joined Kaiser Permanente because I wanted to practice medicine without being distracted by trying to run a business on the side. I've stayed with Kaiser Permanente because it allows me to do whatever I think is best for my patient, without having to get approval from some paper pusher. For 13 years, I've taken care of the sickest pediatric patients who have required the most sophisticated and expensive medical care, and not once has the patient's care been restricted or delayed because I needed someone's OK.

I have served on the Pediatric Quality Assurance Committee for 9 years and was the chairman of this committee for 5 years.

My Credentials

Board certification Pediatrics, American Board of Pediatrics

My Healthcare Practice

I am a pediatric hospital specialist. This means I take care of the kids who are so sick that they need to be hospitalized on the pediatric ward or in the intensive care unit. I chose pediatrics because kids are so much cuter than adults, and you just can't help but want to help them. I decided to be a hospital specialist because I enjoy the challenge and significance of difficult cases. To be able to start with a 3 year old child critically ill with meningitis and see that same child 48 hours later sitting on Mom's lap eating breakfast - it doesn't get much better than that.

As a hospital specialist, I appreciate that working at Kaiser Permanente I have all of my pediatric subspecialist (pulmonologist, cardiologist, endocrinologist, neurologist, etc.) in the same building. When I need help with a patient, I don't need to send my patient to another hospital or phone a consultant I've never met. Instead, I can walk into the office of a pediatric specialist I know and trust and who is readily able to see the patient. This helps us take a team approach to our more complicated patients.

My Outside Interests

When I 'm not working, I spend much of my time coaching my 3 children (ages 10, 12, 14) in multiple sports, hiking in the Sierra's, and working with my church's High School Youth group. And as much as my aging joints allow, I like to compete in triathlons and mountain bike races.

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
