Welcome to my web page!

The official name of our specialty is Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (Oto-HNS). It is more commonly known as Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery and is the medical and surgical specialty of the head and neck. Our residency training is broad and includes but is not limited to general otolaryngology, pediatric otolaryngology, head and neck surgical oncology, otology, rhinology, laryngology, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. My particular area of expertise is in head and neck surgical oncology. My interests include head and neck cancer, thyroid/parathyroid surgery, anterior skull base surgery, reconstructive head and neck surgery including microvascular surgery, endoscopic laryngeal surgery, and endoscopic sinus surgery.

Choosing your specialty is one of the hardest decisions in medical school. I always knew I wanted to be a surgeon, so that narrowed the field down. My first day on the Oto-HNS service during my third year clinical rotation was spent in the operating room for 16 hours with a head and neck cancer patient undergoing removal of the tumor followed by reconstruction at the same time. At the end of the procedure, I was so impressed that my decision was made.

I received my B.A. in General Biology at University of California, San Diego in 1991. This was followed by two years at the Scripps Research Institute where I cultivated basic science research skills, but I realized that my calling was in interacting with people, not DNA. I received my M.D. at Hahnemann University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1997. My internship in General Surgery and residency in Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery was completed at The University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics in Salt Lake City in 2002. I went on to finish a one-year fellowship at the University of Miami in Florida in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction.

I started with The Permanente Medical Group in August 2003. I am enjoying the dedication and camaraderie of my fellow head and neck surgeons and all physicians in the Oakland facility and the regional facilities that refer patients to us. I find that every physician has the same goal: to deliver the best healthcare to our patients.

One of the other satisfactions at Oakland Medical Center is our residency training program in Oto-HNS. I am dedicated to teaching our residents and producing high quality Head & Neck Surgeons. Along the note of teaching, I believe that the best treatment for a patient begins with education. It is difficult to find a “cure” for every problem, but taking the time to explain an ailment makes a world of difference to a patient.

Balance is the key to success in life. In my free time, I enjoy mountain biking, hiking, and snowboarding. Above all else, spending time with my significant other, our families, and our friends is the most important thing to me.
