My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am dual licensed as a Physician Assistant (PA) and Nurse Practitioner (NP) however, I currently practice as a Physician Assistant. Physician Assistants (PA’s) are health care providers licensed to practice medicine in collaboration with a supervising physician(s). I perform physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries, order and interpret tests, educate and perform hands on procedures such as injections, reducing fractures, wound care and casting or splinting. In addition, I assist in surgery, order therapies such as physical therapy, and write prescriptions in the form of drug orders.

Aside from leading a very active life and feeling like I or my friends and family could be in need of orthopedic care on any given day, I chose orthopedics as a specialty because it permits me the privilege to help guide individuals through one of the “worst moments of their lives” so they can return to the lifestyle and activity that they enjoy. I enjoy helping people be able to enjoy activities that they may not otherwise enjoy because of pain or physical limitation.

Specializing in orthopedics keeps me from getting bored, no two days are the same. In my office, I see and treat a variety of musculoskeletal problems from simple sprains, to more severe injuries, to chronic conditions. In the operating room, I function as a first assistant to the surgeon for many orthopedic surgeries from total joint replacements, to amputations, to fixing complex fractures, to arthroscopic procedures. In the hospital, I am responsible for addressing concerns of and the care of hospitalized patients, most are usually post operative. I am able to assist with their recovery and facilitate the process of going home.

My Practice Philosophy

Educating people about their diagnosis and options available for treatment is a vital part of what I do. I feel it is extremely important for people to make informed decisions about treatment and for people to feel confident that they are receiving the best care possible. I like to use models, draw pictures, use practical analogies, and generally allow for as many questions as a patient needs. Gathering information by listening to patients, performing thorough examinations, and reviewing appropriate tests results all afford me the data needed to establish a practical diagnosis and then provide this education to patients with the ultimate goal of restoring healthy lifestyles. I believe once a patient knows and understands what they are being treated for it becomes much easier to decide which, if any, treatment options best suit them.

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I joined Kaiser Permanente in March 2008 in the Orthopedics Department at Morse Avenue, Sacramento. It is a privilege to collaborate with highly skilled surgeons who value the same type of exceptional patient care and education that I do. I appreciate the opportunity to provide care to all Kaiser Permanente members who require orthopedic evaluation and treatment with a team of individuals who support one another in practice and advocacy. I enjoy the interdisciplinary approach to healthcare and it is a unique bonus to be able to easily and conveniently share information with other disciplines and patients via a technologically advanced intranet.

Professional Interests & Affiliations

My passion within orthopedics is trauma. I spent the first 9 years of my orthopedic PA career at a Level II trauma center.

On a Personal Note

My family and I live in Roseville. I enjoy all things outdoors and especially love sports; my mantra being “the more teams, the better!” I play softball, soccer, football, basketball and volleyball and in the winter, I love to snowboard. I am an animal lover with a soft spot for the furry canines, and enjoy my valuable family time as we prepare to send our daughter off to college soon.
