Welcome!

Welcome to my website. I joined Kaiser in 2008 as a Radiation Oncologist. I treat all sites, but I have a specialized interest in pediatric radiation oncology. With your help, I will provide the best care I can, and together we will work through your medical issues.

Who is David Kornguth?

I was born in Madison, Wisconsin just after my mother and father received their PhDs in biochemistry at University of Wisconsin. I attended high school in Bethesda, Maryland and then went to Columbia University, majoring in economics. I then worked for a health care management consulting firm in New York City before coming to Northern California for a business career in health care management. I increasingly developed a desire to become a physician. I ultimately went to Boston for medical school and then did my specialty training in radiation oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. I was an Assistant Professor there and published several articles on brain tumors and pediatric tumors. My passion is treating children with cancer and helping families through the difficult process.

Treating Cancer

There have been many advances in cancer treatment over the past few years. New drugs have improved anti-cancer effects even with diminished side effects. In addition, there is improved ability to characterize tumors based on their genetic signatures. In radiation oncology, we use 3-dimensional information to get the cancer killing radiation energy to the tumor with less normal tissue damage. This improves treatment effectiveness and reduces side effects. Radiation uses high energy X-rays to damage the DNA of cancer cells. Since cancer cells grow quickly, they are especially sensitive to the DNA damage. Tumor cells die if they try to divide with damaged DNA, and this is the main reason radiation is so effective.

You have no primary care physician?

I form many close bonds with my patients and would love to care for every one of them; however, at this moment, I can only see patients while they are on radiation treatment. If you need a primary care provider (PCP), you can do so by clicking on the link below:

Disclaimer
If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
