My Qualifications

Since childhood I always wanted to be a doctor. I distinctly remember giving a speech to my junior high class on why I wanted to be a doctor. I believed back then, and still believe today, that being a physician is a higher calling based in caring for others. I graduated from Wittenberg University with a double major in Biology and English. Biology gave me the science to be a good doctor, English gave me the stories and vocabulary to better understand the human condition. I then went on to complete 4 years of medical education at Ohio State University College of Medicine. After medical school, I completed an internship and residency in Family Medicine at David Grant Medical Center, Travis Force Base, California. I chose Family Medicine because I was drawn to the concept of taking care of the entire person and the entire family. After my residency, I practiced a full spectrum of Family Medicine, serving three years with the Air Force in Okinawa, Japan and three years in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

In November 1999, I joined Kaiser Permanente, in the Department of Medicine in Fairfield. Kaiser Permanente was a perfect fit for me. I wanted to practice in a large organization that provided me with all the resources to care for my patients. Kaiser Permanente allows me to focus on what I do best, care for patients. In 2002, after three years with Kaiser Permanente, I moved to England with my wife and two daughters. From 2003 to 2004 I participated in a one Year Postgraduate Certificate in Evidence-Based Health Care at the University of Oxford, England, United Kingdom. My wife is a physician with the Air Force. She was assigned to a base in England from 2002-2005. During that time I maintained my connection with Kaiser Permanente by periodically flying back to California to work in the hospital and clinic. My wife has returned to work at the David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base and I returned to Fairfield in October 2005.

I am in the Fairfield Kaiser Permanente clinic five days a week. I see patients all day on Tuesday and Friday. On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday I see patients half the day. One week a month I see Kaiser Permanente patients in the local community nursing homes and rehabilitation centers and thus during that week I am only in clinc in the morning.

Besides practicing medicine, I enjoy running, reading, writing and spending time with my family. Our family is filled with wanderlust and we have the passports to prove it. Experiencing other cultures through travel invigorates us.

My personal philosophy on healthcare is influenced by the variety of my interests. As an athlete, I believe in caring for our body by eating right and exercising often. For me, there is no better medicine for the body and soul than a forty minute run at a vigorous pace. Obviously, each individual has to pick the exercise that is best for them. Exercise has to be fun and frequent.

While exercise and eating right can help prevent illnesses such as diabetes and high blood pressure, there are illnesses that are not preventable. My role as your physician when you are ill is to treat, guide, and care for you, with a blend of science, art, and empathy.
