About Me
I am an allergist who joined Kaiser in 1998 after a first career in the Navy, where I retired as a Medical Corps Captain. I grew up in New Jersey, and after college at Harvard and medical school at Yale, I became interested in allergy and asthma during my internship at Stanford. At that time the doctor draft was still in effect, and I joined the Navy as a flight surgeon and was fortunate to have assignments in Hawaii, Japan, New Zealand, and McMurdo, Antarctica with Operation Deep Freeze -- all in just four years! After finishing training in pediatrics and allergy, I reverted to a more "traditional" office allergy practice. I was the chief of allergy at the Navy Hospital in San Diego for seven years and Oakland for six. I served for eight years as the Navy Surgeon General's consultant for the specialty of allergy and was also the Navy policy advisor on tobacco. You can see the results of my continued interest in tobacco and health in my recently published reference book, The Tobacco Book (Sunstone Press, 2004).
I enjoy very much working for Kaiser and having the autonomy to make the best medical choices for patients. It is an outstanding organization!
In my free time I am a wilderness enthusiast and enjoy backpacking, mountain climbing, and nature photography. I am an associate clinical professor at University of California, San Francisco and volunteer faculty there one day a month. I am a recent president of the Allergy Association of Northern California and on the board of directors of the Allergy Foundation of Northern California. My wife is a middle school math teacher and we have two daughters, one in college and the other at business school.

An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
