My background: I grew up in Niagara Falls, NY, the home of the Love Canal toxic waste disaster, and ground zero of the Buffalo snowbelt. Despite the cold weather and the environmental hazards, the memories are fond.

I received my undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan where I majored in English literature. In 1971, I moved to San Francisco where I attended medical school at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF).

My first connection with Kaiser Permanente occurred when I was a senior medical student, and I volunteered for a one-month elective rotation at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in San Francisco. As an idealistic young medical student, I was immediately and unexpectedly struck by the quality and commitment of the physicians I met during that one-month elective. I was deeply moved by the social mission of the organization and by the energy and spirit of innovation I discovered at Kaiser Permanente. I knew immediately that Kaiser was a very special place.

When I finished my 4 years of medical school at UCSF, I chose to do 3 years of internal medicine training as an intern and resident at Kaiser San Francisco and found that all of my initial impressions and expectations were everything I had hoped for. I returned to UCSF to train in Hematology and Oncology, but I knew that when my training was completed, I would do my best to find a career with Kaiser Permanente.

So, when I completed my hematology-oncology training in 1981, I felt extremely fortunate to find a position at the Kaiser Oakland Medical Center, and I have been here ever since. In 1995, we consolidated the Hematology-Oncology services at the Oakland and Richmond campuses, and I now also have the privilege of working closely with the fine physicians and nurses of Kaiser Richmond.

A day has not passed that I have not felt extraordinarily fortunate to have had this opportunity and this career. I work with a group of superlative physicians and nurses, and I take deep satisfaction knowing that the organization I work for is constantly striving to improve the quality of the care it delivers.

In my spare time, I am blessed with a wonderful wife and three terrific daughters. I am involved in a wide range of research activities, I have developed and maintain a medical software application that manages cancer chemotherapy, and I play jazz and blues piano. (I can strongly recommend my piano teacher, Mr. Sam Rudin, who performs regularly using the stage name, Hurricane Sam.)

Contacting me: I always welcome questions and calls from my patients. In particular, if you want to contact me electronically, I will be reachable through our new secure messaging system, E-mail your doctor, beginning October 12, 2005.
