My Specialty and Why I Chose It
I am a retinal specialist. I am a surgeon that works in the very back of the eye. The retina is a very delicate, thin part of the eye that allows all of us to see. When disease such as diabetes or macular degeneration affects this part of the eye, the visual problems can be significant. I like the challenge of listening to my patients and applying all that I know in order to solve these complicated problems.

My Practice Philosophy
I have always been an advocate that knowledge is power. The more you know about your problem, the more enlightened you can feel. Often retinal diseases have no cure, or "magic bullet." However, by gaining information, you as the patient can learn from all the others in your same situation and minimize the impact of eye disease on your day to day life. Afterall, the reason we go to the doctor is to ultimately improve our day to day well being.
My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente
I am a new addition to the Kaiser Permanente family. I joined this group in 2005 after being in private practice for three years. I was impressed by the Kaiser philosophy that stresses quality patient care. Here I do not need to be a businessman, rather a physician, the very thing that I was trained to do.
Why I Like Practicing Medicine at Kaiser Permanente
The Kaiser Permanente system makes it easy to be the best physician I can be. The objective here is not only to "cure", but truly to "thrive". So many of the common diseases of this day and age are life-style related. There is a strong focus on patient education and preventative care here. By altering lifestyle habits (smoking, stress reduction, diets) many of the most serious diseases such as diabetes and heart disease can truly be minimized. The collaborative efforts that exist here between specialties and the open communication amongst physicians facilitates this approach.
My Professional Interests and Affiliations
Besides my MD, I also have a Ph.D. in molecular genetics. I have done research in the past and keep up with the scientific advances in my field. I was board certified in Ophthalmology in 2004 and I am a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
On a Personal Note…
I am a recent transplant from the Palm Springs area. I am likely one of the few that would consider a Sacramento summer "cool". I came to Sacramento to enjoy all that Northern California offers. I am avid hiker and mountain climber. I have scaled mountains in Nepal and elsewhere. I am a ski enthusiast and am open to learning more about the Sierra area from the experts....the locals that call Sacramento home.
I look forward to welcoming you to my practice and being your health advocate.
