My Specialty and Why I Chose It

I am a Speech and Language Pathologist. This means I provide evaluation and treatment for individuals with a variety of communication (speech, language or voice), or cognitive disorders and dysphagia (difficulty swallowing ). I decided to do this because the profession combines the fields of medicine, psychology and education into one. I have always been fascinated by the process by which we communicate with each other.

My Practice Philosophy

I follow the old adage that function follows form. After an individual suffers an illness with a resulting communication disorder, it is important that we find a way to simplify the communication process for them. This may mean teaching them another way to communicate or an alternative method to formulate a thought. Successful communicators will integrate all communication modalities (speech, voice, gestures, facial expression) to convey a thought.

My Credentials

BA, Communication DisordersWhittier College1985
MA, Speech-Language PathologyWhittier College1987

My Tenure with Kaiser Permanente

I have been a part of Kaiser Permanente since 1990. I even interned at Kaiser Bellflower in Southern California after graduating from Whittier College. I have always been impressed by the integrated care that we have been allowed to provide in the Rehabilitative Services Department. My colleagues are dedicated to helping improve the quality of life for all of their clients.

Why I Chose Kaiser Permanente

I can’t imagine a better place for a Speech Language Pathologist to practice. I have the opportunity to participate in the care of individuals from birth to 100 with a full spectrum of communication and swallowing challenges. I appreciate that I am allowed to provide service in both the Hospital and Clinic setting. The level of communication between professionals here at Kaiser is quite impressive, which allows for a more comprehensive and efficient model of service delivery.

An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
