Dr. Saal received his undergraduate education from MIT, graduating with a degree in Biology. He continued his medical education at Yale School of Medicine and graduated in 1997.

After graduating from Yale, Dr. Saal completed his residency training at Stanford. He continued on at Stanford for his fellowship where he researched cellular and molecular mechanisms of stress and addictions. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry.
