About Me

I was born in Sydney, Australia, and grew up in San Francisco. After graduation from the University of California in Davis, I traveled extensively, ending up in Israel where I attended medical school at Technion University. I began my residency in pediatrics at Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York. Becoming disillusioned with pediatrics, I transferred to the more exciting field of anesthesia, specializing in pediatric anesthesia. After having been away for ten years, I was eager to return to the Bay Area where the people are friendly and the weather is almost perfect. I also wanted to settle near my family.

When I joined Kaiser Oakland in 1992, our department was quite small. I was the second pediatric anesthesiologist, we had two pain specialists, and the other physicians were generalists. Our department has more than doubled in size since then. We now have physicians with subspecialty training in cardiovascular anesthesia, pediatrics, obstetric anesthesia, and chronic and acute pain management. New services that we have added during the past few years include a highly regarded pediatric neurosurgery program, a tertiary pediatric center, a regional center for spinal surgery, and what has become one of the finest cardiac surgery programs in the area. My clinical work is now evenly divided between anesthesia for pediatric surgery and adult cardiac surgery.

I feel truly blessed to be doing something that I enjoy so much, and to be working with such dedicated health care professionals. Working in the Kaiser system allows all of us to thrive professionally and to provide appropriate medical care without regard to financial gain.

Currently, I live in the Oakland hills with my loving wife and our two adorable children. My greatest pleasure is spending time with my family and our pets. I also love to ski, cook, travel, and am an avid digital photographer.

If you or your child are scheduled for surgery or for a non-surgical procedure that may require anesthesia, I recommend looking at the website below, developed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, before your pre-surgical appointment so that you may be better prepared to ask questions about your anesthesia care:

If you think you have a MEDICAL OR PSYCHIATRIC EMERGENCY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY or go to the nearest hospital. DO NOT attempt to access emergency care through this web site. An emergency medical condition is a medical or psychiatric condition that manifests itself by acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including severe pain) such that you could reasonably expect the absence of immediate medical attention to result in any of the following: serious jeopardy to your health, serious impairment to your bodily functions, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part. An emergency medical condition is also "active labor," which means a labor when there is inadequate time for safe transfer to a Plan hospital (or designated hospital) before delivery or if a transfer poses a threat to the health of the member or unborn child.
